Spring is here! Welcome to the latest edition of the Palms Trading Company Indian Art Update. We are all excited to bring you news from Albuquerque and New Mexico.
We have many new stories to share with you, and think you’ll enjoy the up close and personal information on Judy Lewis, the fantastic potter from Acoma Pueblo, NM, as well as in interesting conversation with our very own Lily Cordova, a petite dynamo that we are thrilled to have on our staff. This year, we will give out more money from our Pueblo Scholarship Fund than we ever have to several deserving Pueblo seniors in an effort to help them with some of their upcoming college expenses. Many thanks to all who have donated to this special program for your continued support.
Thanks to the great work of our buyers and staff, we also have a tremendous inventory of new jewelry and pottery. I have personally purchased a large amount of vintage jewelry, including Fred Harvey items from the 1940’s and 50’s in the past several months, and am proud of the options we have to offer you, our valued customers.
Please call one of our personal shoppers to talk about any of our new items and request pictures if you wish.
As always, we sincerely appreciate the opportunity to serve our customers for over 86 years as Palms Food Market and Palms Trading Company.

The Palms Trading Pueblo Scholarship Fund: Awarding Deserving Native American High School Seniors |
|
The time has come again for us to begin considering which Native American high school seniors will be receiving our annual Palms Trading Pueblo Scholarship. Last year, we awarded two scholarships to Native American students who went on to use them toward their college expenses. To receive this scholarship, a student must be recommended by their high school counselor, have maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or above, and participated in at least one extracurricular activity. In years past we have relied almost exclusively on donations from our customers and interested patrons in order to award these scholarships, and we would like to extend our sincere appreciation and gratitude for the interest our customers have shown in this endeavor and these students.

If you would like to make a contribution, please please contact us via phone, e-mail, or social media. You are also welcome to make a donation directly on our website. Every little bit helps, and we hope to continue to grow the program so that we may give out multiple scholarships in even larger amounts in the future. We appreciate your continued support of this important initiative, which allows us to give back to the very people who give so much to us. |

Artist Spotlight: Judy Lewis Judy Lewis, born April 7, 1964 to Kathryn and Edward Lewis, was destined to be an artist. Her mother creates pottery, her father, jewelry, and her sisters Marilyn Ray, Carolyn Concho, and Sharon Lewis are all potters. In fact, Judy was both inspired and mentored by her sister, Marilyn’s, passion and ambition for working with clay, and it was Marilyn who taught Judy the art of creating storytellers. While each of her family members has carved out a niche for themselves within the realm of Pueblo pottery, Judy specializes in figurines and storytellers with beautiful, happy faces that are often accompanied by animals such as dogs and cats, as well as birds, butterflies, and ladybugs. Although she has won many awards throughout the years (she began creating pottery in 1986), Judy is most proud of her giraffe figurine that took first place at the Santa Fe Indian Market.

Judy tells us that the energy and blessings in her storytellers come from the breath she blows into their mouths before the clay is fired. Pottery making is truly a special and spiritual part of Judy’s life, and we are so lucky to have had the chance to work with her and each of her family members throughout the years. Judy’s smile, like those painted onto her gorgeous pottery pieces, lights up the room, and it’s so wonderful to see someone have such an infectious passion for their craft and culture. |

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: Lily Cordova
We’re pleased to introduce to you our littlest team member with the biggest personality: Lily Cordova. Lily, born on June 9, 1997 in Albuquerque, NM, joined the Palms family on June 8, 2016. She is currently a full-time student at the University of New Mexico in her senior year, studying Intercultural Communication and English. She graduates in May, and plans to travel and work for some time before branching out to a career more centered around her major, which she would like to be in editing. Lily can most often be found working in our jewelry department, helping customers, organizing the space, and taking photos, for which she has an incredible eye. These photos can often be found on the store Pinterest account, which Lily runs, as well as featured on Amazon. Always measured and thoughtful, Lily explains that her favorite aspect of working at Palms is “how, as a business, we stress the importance of honest and community. While we are constantly receiving new inventory, we do our best to give as much information as we can at a fair and honest price.” Her favorite artist is Will Denetdale, because “he always works with the most unique, eye-catching stones,” although she can often be found wearing an eclectic and unique mix of pieces that always complement her personal style.
In her free time, Lily enjoys spending time with her family and friends, hiking, rock climbing, practicing yoga, camping, and reading. In fact, some of those activities tie directly into her favorite things about Albuquerque: “the culture, food, and most of all the mountains for hiking and photography.” While we hope she chooses to stay with us for a long time, we may only be fortunate enough to employ Lily through the remainder of this year. If you’re in town, please stop by and take a minute to interact with her; we promise you’ll walk away with a smile on your face, and likely a piece or two of beautiful jewelry that are uniquely you. Trust us, Lily’s got a knack for that. |
